The programme focuses on the procedural, substantive and juris prudence element of labour law.

Introduction

Structured as an Advance Certificate in Labour Law, the programme is intended for senior or full-time shop stewards and union officials who deal with disputes and usually appear in disciplinary hearings, CCMA, Bargaining Councils, Labour Court, and other related structures pitched at NQF level 6. The programme focuses on the procedural, substantive and juris prudence element of labour law. It includes element of common law, legal pleading, authoring of legal documents, and the political economy of labour law. The modules coverage includes:

  • The Introduction to the South African Legal Framework;
  • The Individual Labour Law;
  • The Collective Labour Law;
  • The Law and Theory of Unfair Labour Practices;
  • The Law and Theory of Unfair Dismissal;
  • CCMA Rules;
  • Labour Court Rules;
  • The Theory and Practice of Evidence in Labour Matters; and
  • The Relief in Labour Disputes.

This course articulates with the labour studies and labour economics programmes. The programme is offered over the period of two year and structured in blocks of five days each.

This is an advanced level programme and is intended for union representatives and official with great deal of experience in the industrial relation context. It articulates with the labour studies and labour economics programmes.
